Artist Statement
My thesis exhibition titled "Discourse" explores the figure and perspectives on body image with installation and sculpture. My experience drawing and interacting with my models was the catalyst for this work. Issues pertaining to body image and the feelings associated with it are the inspiration for these works. I recorded interviews with my models discussing their attitudes toward their own body image. The combination of the edited audio and numerous mirrors force the viewer in the installation to contemplate their own image. The smaller sculptures incorporate found objects, text from my interviews as well as the drawings, which were a key component of my investigation. In this exhibition it is my intent that the viewer is confronted with the decision to interact and open curtains and drawers and reflect on the subject of this work. I would like the work to make an emotional connection with those who experience it.
